Roberto Wirth, general manager of the legendary Hotel Hassler Villa Medici in Rome, is the very soul of Italian warmth and congeniality. You can think of him as the Marcello Mastroianni of the hotel business. His career has been devoted to the art of making other people comfortable and at ease.

And yet he leaves you feeling twinges of inadequacy. Not simply because as a relatively young man he's in charge of so admired an institution as the Hassler, or even because he's fluent in German and English as well as Italian; after all multilingualism is a not-uncommon accomplishment among European businessmen.

What makes all of Mr. Wirth's considerable achievements so remarkable is that he was born deaf. It's one thing to learn to lip read and to speak, as Mr. Wirth did, in your native tongue if you're hearing-impaired; it is quite another to learn to converse in foreign languages.

This of course is not something you learn from the urbane Mr. Wirth, but from the hotel's public relations officer, who remains in awe of the man despite an association of several years.

You learn the basic biography, as well; that Mr. Wirth is the scion of a family of Swiss hoteliers, whose father Oscar Wirth in 1938 tore down the original, dark and labyrinthine Hassler and built a modern luxury hotel behind a faÁade that replicated the original. That, on Mussolini's orders, he named it the Villa MedicióHassler didn't sound Italian enough for il Duce. That, after the war, he rechristened it with its former name, though many Romans still know it as simply the Villa Medici. (The sixteenth century Medici villa is in fact just a few steps up the street.) That little Roberto entered the world in a room in the nearby Hotel Eden, which was at one time sistered to the Hassler and connected by a tunnel.

When Oscar died in 1968 his wife, Carmen, took over the hotel as regent, while Roberto attended Cornell University and interned in management at hotels around the world. Roberto assumed the position of general manager in 1982; his mother occupies a suite at the Hassler when she's not at the family estate in Umbria.

And now the other one response: “My sister and I were not happy with the room itself when stayed in some hotels. We loved the beds and especially the pillows however the mold and mildew in the bathtub was not cutting it.
There were stains on the carpet too. Considering we were only there to sleep and shower I guess it was ok. Just remember to bring the flip flops the college kids use to take showers with.”

The hotel Caesar House Residenze Romane has well charm and the warmest and helpful staff. The rooms are alwais ready for visitors, there are a king bed, a small table/sitting area, and a day bed. So charming hotel, one loves it!
Its Etro (high end Italian designer) toiletries in the bathroom are so impressing!
Location of the Caesar House Residenze Romane is great, the staff is fantastic, the breakfast is good and served in the room.
A jolly good place to stay. It is not a hotel with 24hr room service the bathroom is not cleaned daily but towels are changed.
Though in such a busy central place it's quiet and feel peaceful. The staff is perhabs the main selling point of the hotel.

Hotel is quite tiny and relax. There are only 7 room, but travelers are very impressed with the service and amenities. The average price is $ 290 for a room.

The hotel maintains flavour of the original architecture. It makes beautiful base in a romantic and relaxing ambiance.This area of Rome is an historical and central, it is the heart of one of the most ancient and outstanding districts of Rome, Trastevere full of tranquility immersed in an intricate labyrinth of colorful and vivacious narrow streets.

Great place for a hotel, Trastevere is a little rough around the edges.

Santa Maria hotel is different from other hotels. Every room faces the courtyard, a long stay is more pleasant because you aren't going up in a windowless elevator and walking down stark hallways every time you return to your room. The orange trees in the courtyard were amazing to look at every day.
The breakfast is awesome. Scrambled eggs!
The breakfast room is also served as a bar in the evenings with complimentary appetizers (like Boccaccio).

Trastevere area of Rome is great. After walking all around the city seeing the sites, it's not as commercialized as the other areas there is a feel this is the "Roman" part of Rome. No busy traffic, very relaxing place, and very easy to get to any sight - the Vatican, the Colosseum, Trevi fountain.

Lovely place, Santa Maria hotel in fact has lovely comfort, beautiful staff and service.
